Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is CrossFit for me?

A: CrossFit is right for everyone. But don’t be confused, not everyone is right for CrossFit. Our workouts are not easy and they may literally be the most challenging workouts you will ever come across. But, our workouts may also be the most rewarding and provide the best results by far. CrossFit is for you - only if you want it to be. Elite fitness should be your goal and nothing should stand in your way. We will help you to break down barriers and overcome obstacles. If you are open to being pushed (because we will push you just as we push ourselves) for greater intensity, better technique, faster times, longer distances, heavier loads, superb form, and more reps, then you will achieve elite fitness. All fitness levels, ages, experience, and weights are welcome to walk through our doors… The strong stay, and the determined thrive.

Q: Do I have to be “in-shape” before I join?

A: No! Our job is get you “in shape”! No one that walks through our doors as an elite CrossFitter. All fitness levels are welcome. We are trained to get you into the best “shape” of your lives.  Just take a look at our credentials on our Coaches page.

Q: Why do you call your members “Athletes”? I do not consider myself an athlete and now I am intimidated.

A: Because that is what we make you: an athlete. No need to be intimidated! At CFB you are not just considered a “member” you are a part of a team. One definition of an athlete is a person trained to compete in sports or exercises involving physical strength, speed, or endurance. At CrossFit Bluefield your training will involve all of the components of fitness :

  1. Cardiovascular / respiratory endurance- The ability of body systems to gather, process, and deliver oxygen.
  2. Stamina – The ability of body systems to process, deliver, store, and utilize energy.
  3. Strength – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force.
  4. Flexibility – The ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint.
  5. Power – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply maximum force in minimum time.
  6. Speed – The ability to minimize the time cycle of a repeated movement.
  7. Coordination – The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a singular distinct movement.
  8. Agility – The ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another.
  9. Balance – The ability to control the placement of the body’s center of gravity in relation to its support base.
  10. Accuracy – The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.

Q: Why does CrossFit cost more than my membership at the “Globo-Gym” ?

A: We cannot and should not be compared to your membership at the “Globo-Gym”. It’s like trying to compare a bologna sandwich with a Chocolate Milkshake - it doesn’t make sense. We offer completely different, elite, and far more effective services. Keep reading….

Q: Why is CrossFit Bluefield so “expensive“?

A: First off: the real question is “What is the value of CrossFit Bluefield?" Answer: We offer you an effective style of programming, certified and knowledgeable coaches at your disposal every time you walk through our doors all for one flat rate a month. If you walked into your “Globo-Gym”  and asked for a constantly varied effective program and a certified coach at your disposal every day of the week here is what you would get:

You would be required to sign up for a yearly membership (on average this will cost you $400 a year or $33 a month - not to mention your enrollment fees). Additionally you would be required to sign up for a personal trainer (which usually requires a 6-12 month commitment with a strict cancellation policy plus a ridiculous enrollment fee). Let’s say you decide to work with a personal trainer 3 days a week for 30 minutes. That is $40 a session x 3 days a week= $120 a week (or $480 a month).

What does that equal to a month? Over $500!

Now think about your local “Globo Gym”...  Look around at the equipment and number of machines. Each machine (treadmill, fly, cable, etc.) averages $ 5,000.00. Sure they offer you a  dirt cheap membership. But they will require several hundred to thousands of members to pay off those expensive machines and fancy smoothie bars in order to stay in business. Imagine if every member showed up at the same time? It is a known fact that on average 1 in 5 globo gym members use the gym only twice a week ((( about 2% of their members walk through their doors everyday)))). (At CFB we plan on seeing an average of 40%+ of our members on a daily basis!) The bottom line is that the typical “globo gym” business model centers around selling memberships to people who infrequently or never show up. CFB only operates as a business as long as you show up. We thrive on your success!

Q: What exactly is a CrossFit Affiliate?

A: CrossFit’s mission is to fuel a revolution in fitness based on the pursuit of function, not form-on measurements of performance, not anatomy. We want rings and bumper plates in our gyms, not machines. We believe that where you train is less important than how you train and whom you train with matters more than what gear you have. We know this can be done anywhere. We’ve proven that the back yard to the garage to the warehouse is as good an environment as any for forging elite fitness.

From the beginning, the CrossFit movement has provided an alternative to the prevailing commercial gym establishment and its signature “big-box,” machine-based, bodybuilding approach to fitness. We promoted the ethic and aesthetic of the garage gym in large part to provide a home and refuge for our more athletic programming, which couldn’t find quarter in the commercial gyms.

CrossFit is not a franchise and never will be. Our affiliates constitute a confederation of legitimate fitness practitionersunited around constantly varied, intense, functional exercise and pooling reliable resources under the CrossFit name.  Today, with approximately 2,000 affiliates worldwide, we see ourselves as part of a larger war between the methods, outcomes, and principles of big-box franchises such as the Golds, Ballys, and 24-Hour Fitnesses and those of our small-box facilities.

We are holding court in London, New York, New Brunswick, Puerto Rico, Baghdad, Kabul, and Qatar. CrossFit crews are convening in public parks, garages and carports, basements, barns, deposed tyrants’ homes, commercial gyms, storage lockers, martial arts academies, and universities, under bleachers, and on military bases.

CrossFit affiliation is an Internet-based grassroots movement started by CrossFitters who wanted their own local CrossFit-equipped gyms, trainers, and communities. It has become a call to all who really care about fitness to get the car out of the garage, pick up some dumbbells, a barbell, a few plates, a pull-up bar, and some rings, and try the Workout of the Day. -Courtesy of CrossFit Inc

CrossFit Bluefield is the first CrossFit Affiliate in our area!  Please beware of impostors who claim to do “CrossFit” or “CrossFit-like” programs. Anyone can run you through a “killer workout” but only we are certified, qualified, and legally able to effectively and safely train you using the CrossFit methods.  CrossFit Bluefield is the only gym in our area recognized by CrossFit, Inc., and thereby the only business granted the rights to use the name CROSSFIT in our training and programming!

A: The WOD is an acronym for Workout of the Day. The WOD can be found updated daily on our WOD page and also written on the chalkboard in our gym.

Q: I don’t like to run. Will you make me run?

A: Yes and no. Do we run at CrossFit Bluefield? You bet. Will our coaches make you run? No, we can’t make the unwilling do anything. If you come to us unwilling to work hard or be trained efficiently then you might as well not come at all.

Q: Is this a Cult?

A: Maybe, just without the creepy leaders. Read here.
